There has been a Russian wheat crisis and harvest difficulties in Europe. This means buying a pint of beer in Europe is now going to cost about $ 6.30. But here’s something to really take the sizzle out of your day: bacon prices are stampeding onward and upward. Last year bacon prices were cheaper. CNBC says the price went up 20 percent. The prices increasing is a good thing considering the U.S. economy. Of course there are some individuals just a little upset by the whole idea of paying more for bacon.
Getting bacon can cost $ 4 per pound
The Department of Agriculture claims the steep bacon price increase over the past year is the result of a classic supply-and-demand situation. Pig farms have been getting smaller lately. This is due to the recession. Tomatoes are in season meaning more individuals are wanting BLTs, which demands bacon of course. Bacon is something needed for BLTs. Those are hot in demand with the tomato season going strong. The National Review has gone so far as to call this culinary conundrum “Obama’s Next Crisis.”
Sad for some, but great for many
The National Review didn’t explain all the good things that come from this. This means that more individuals want to buy luxury items such as bacon. The economy will likely do better considering this outreach for luxury items. Research firm Allendale, Inc.’s Rich Nelson explained that “They may not be buying steak rather than hamburger, but they will put bacon on their hamburger or other things.”
Bacon tends to be in more items at restaurants because of this.
Pig farmers have gotten more hogs because of the demand. Bacon prices will likely go down by mid-2011, says Nelson. More generic brands of bacon are going to be bought meaning fattier bacon with less meat to cook after losing this fat. According to Jason Mosely of Mr. Baconpants, “Your BLT deserves the best bacon you are able to afford!” although most know the economy must be recovering because of the greatness of bacon, including CNBC’s Heather Lauer. International Bacon Day lies on September fourth and could be celebrated patriotically hopefully. Really and truly, it is.
